Bronc riding

Riding a bucking horse for eight seconds, one hand up and never touching the horse with it. Half the score is the horse's.

Bronc riding splits into two events that look similar from the stands and are almost nothing alike to ride. Saddle bronc uses a stripped-down saddle and a thick rein attached to the halter, and it is ridden long and rhythmic — the cowboy's own description is that it is the closest rodeo comes to a dance. Bareback has no saddle and no rein: the rider hangs off a leather rigging handle set over the withers, leans back and takes the shock through their arm and shoulder. Both last eight seconds, both are scored out of a hundred with the horse earning up to half of it, and both start with the mark-out rule that disqualifies a rider whose heels are not over the shoulders on the first jump out.
